Foodie Guide: How To Eat Your Way Like Bourdain in Sydney

sydeny, gluten-free sydney, gluten-free travel Gregg and I are both fans of Anthony Bourdain, brazen host of the Travel Channel’s popular “No Reservations” and after watching the episode of his visit in Sydney, each and every place he went, the food looked incredibly delicious.

Naturally, we followed in the food junkie’s footsteps through the gastronomic wonderland of Sydney.

Dark, warm and sultry Gardels Bar

When you cross the doorway of Porteno, opened by spunky quoiffed slick dolled up waiters that greet with a smile, well dressed in vests and rolled up sleeves so you can see their tatts; upstairs is a small bar called Gardels. It seems as if one has walked into old Palermo Hollywood in Buenos Aires.

Being an Argentinean place, the wine list and drink menu is filled with beverages and a notable wine list from Argentina. I enjoyed a beautiful red from Mendoza. We shared the marinated olives as we enjoyed a first round of drinks. Still eye-balling the menu we ordered the roast mushroom that were sautéed with creamed almonds, preserved in lemon and coriander crumbs, along with the marinated mussels. Everything was amazing.

Chiswick

On a summer Sydney evening, windows and doors open to the gardens, Gregg and I enjoyed a delicious dinner at Chiswick. Excellent service yet unpretentious - an overall festive feeling in this beautiful, airy room. A lovely spot with terrific food.

Chiswick is a restaurant and bar co-owned and operated by Matt Moran and Peter Sullivan located in Sydney's Chiswick Gardens, Woollahra, making this a lovely neighbourhood restaurant. As the website suggests, "the menu is designed for sharing and focuses on first-rate and seasonal produce." Gregg and I did just that.

For starters, we nibbled on the char-grilled carrots, smoked almonds, cumin and lemon; followed by raw oysters.

After seeing Anthony Bourdain enjoy the wood roasted Moran family lamb, green olive & fennel , we decided hey why not!

For dessert we split the mango & vanilla bombe alaska--this delicate dessert was like a tangy margarine.

Everything was simply delicious.

Casual Harry's Cafe De Wheels

Before taking advantage of the free wi-fi in the Art Museum, Gregg and I looked up places nearby for lunch. We were walking by and came across Harry's Cafe de Wheels, a spot that Bourdain had stopped; Yelp rated it #1 as well as our not-so-handy guidebook. We had to stop. And of course it being on No Reservations, this was also our last bull-it pointed item on our list of "must trys."

Thought, not exactly gluten-free (aside from the mashed peas and mashed potatoes); Gregg opted to try the Curry Pie with the Mashed Potatoes, Mashed Peas and Gravy on top. It looked delicious. The curry flavor is excellent, and even the mashed peas are tasty. This place is an institution for a reason. Also well priced, only $5.30, cannot beat that! (Especially in Sydney!
